The Dr. Larry Ross Professional Model Tenor Saxophone

Today, many saxophonists are designing their own models, and here is my new entry, the Dr. Larry Ross Professional Model! This horn will meet and exceed all basic pro application requirements, matched with the enclosed Meyer 5M Professional Mouthpiece; this Antique Copper Finish over yellow-brass saxophone, with welded tone hole rings and an underslung octave key is designed for the saxophonist to take the horn with him/her to perform at any venue, right out of the case. The welded tone hole rings give the horn a beautifully dark tone, and the sound ‘between notes’ is smooth (you will not hear any unwanted ‘chaos’). Each horn is made to order, one at a time, hand engraved, and these horns will never be ‘mass-produced’.

Please take a moment to listen to the play-tests, which will give you an idea of what this horn will sound like right out of the case. (I tried a Vandoren Java Red Box 2 ½ and got a modern tone, and with the Vandoren Java Red Box 3 I got a totally vintage dark tone! The horn plays effortlessly.)

The new Dr. Larry Ross Professional Model consolidates the features that are absent in the top big-box models, like the Selmer Paris 64 Series III Saxophone (List Price $7,655.00 - $9,410.00, straight tone holes only no underslung octave or rolled tone holes available), the Keilwerth SX90R Saxophone (List Price $7,390.00 - $8,203.00, rolled tone holes, but no underslung octave key available), and the Yanagisawa T991 Saxophone (List Price $5,750.00 - $6,495.00, underslung octave key, but not available with rolled tone holes).

I started playing the tenor saxophone in 1967, on a glittering, new Conn silver satin finished horn (before that, I was an oboe and bassoon player in orchestras), and over the years, I have owned and played most of the top horns (e.g. the Selmer Mark VI, which I played exclusively from 1981 – 1985, the Selmer Paris Reference 36 Model 84, the Selmer Paris 64 Series III, the Keilwerth SX90R, the Buffet Crampon Super Dynaction, the Pierret Paris Super Artiste, the Kohlert Winnenden and 57’ models, the Yanagisawa T-5, and all of the handmade B&S Germany Chicago Jazz Series horns, to name a few). My evaluation of the strengths, and weaknesses, of these horns provided the rationale for my CAD (Computer-Aided Design) project that led to this horn’s configuration. (I took Drafting in 1966 with Mr. Socrates Papadopoulos, and designing with a computer is much easier than using a T-square, a Drafting Compass, and a protractor!)

Thus, the new Dr. Larry Ross Professional Model tenor saxophone represents the culmination of a process of experimentation, and discovery, over the last fifty years.

The DLR Professional Model Tenor Saxophone

Today, many saxophonists are designing their own models, and here is my new entry, the DLR Professional Model! This horn will meet and exceed all basic pro application requirements, matched with the Otto Link 6* mouthpiece (John Coltrane settled on the Otto Link 6* after trying a bag full of mouthpieces; I started using this model in 1968 after going to a Pharaoh Saunders concert at my alma mater Case Western Reserve University. Lonnie Liston Smith and Clifford Jarvis played with Pharaoh, and it was awesome!!!)
